Yui Hirasawa is the older sister of Ui Hirasawa, although Ui acts more like the "older sister" of Yui, as she is more responsible and mature enough to take care of her older sister. She is also shown to be very adept at cooking much like Brock does, due to the fact she often cooks for her sister, Yui. After graduating from elementary school, she started visiting the same school Yui and Nodoka attended and became friends with her schoolmate, Jun Suzuki. Eventually, she became friends with Nodoka Manabe who often visited Yui at home and also build a friendly connection to their neighbour Tomi Ichimonji. Since their parents often travel across the world, Ui got used to fill the role of the household's caretaker and constantly looked after her older sister. One christmas in the past, she wished for a "White Christmas" which was provisorily granted the next day by Yui who stuffed a bush in front of their house with the foam of a pillow which earned Yui heavy scoldings from their father. Ui was born one year after her older sister Yui Hirasawa and grew up with her together, developing a strong affection to her which was returned equally. She joins the Light Music Club along with Jun at the end of the series, becoming a guitarist like her sister. One time Ui pretended to be Yui because she wanted to try to hug Azusa. Once, she pretended to be Yui when her sister was sick but failed because she did not know the nicknames Yui had given to the Light Music Club members. Despite being a year younger than Yui, she looks nearly identical to her when her hair is down.

Sometimes, she teaches Yui how to play some parts of the guitar since Yui is not so good at reading sheet music. Like Yui, she is a fast learner, as she was once at a baseball center with Jun and Azusa, and after Ui overheard some tips from a stranger, she followed his tips and managed to hit a home run on her first at-bat. This is seen when Ritsu hears about how Ui took care of Yui at the end of the Christmas episode. Ritsu at times envies that and more than once she and the others wished they had a sister like Ui. This has been used on occasion to tease Yui, though it is obvious to the three that Ui and Yui love and care for each other. The differences between sisters is quickly seen in episode 3 when Mugi, Mio, and Ritsu meet Ui for the first time, and are quite surprised at how Ui is compared to Yui. She is in the same class as Azusa and hangs out with her sometimes.

Ui is actually considered as the ultimate groupie for her sister's band and supports them with all her heart. Ui easily picks up hobbies and is very skilled at most things she does. She has an extreme talent for playing the guitar, and became capable of playing with the rest of the Light Music Club band only after a few days of practice. Unlike her older sister, Ui is mature, smart, responsible and handles household chores well, but she has a great deal of love and respect for her older sister and takes particularly good care of Yui, striving to look after her even at the risk of her own health. When the story begins, Ui is a third-year junior middle school student, but later she enters the same school as her older sister in high school the following year. Ui's parents are a dating couple and are rarely home, so she does house tasks in their stead. Ui is basically a more skilled, knowledgeable, mature, dependable, and younger version of Yui Hirasawa. As of Imitation Confrontation!, she is 17 years old, just like Azusa. Ui Hirasawa is one of the main protagonists of the K-ON! series, she plays the guitar like her sister Yui Hirasawa (after she graduated for university) and also knows how to play the organ.
